Fall in Love with Paris: Your Ultimate Tourist Guide to the City of Lights

Paris, the City of Lights, was and still is my favorite destination. With its iconic landmarks, charming streets, and rich history, Paris is a place that should be on your travel bucket list as it was on mine. Whether you're a first-time visitor or a seasoned traveler my guide to the City of Lights will help you uncover the best of Paris.

1. Start with the Classics: Must-See Landmarks

In my opinion no trip to Paris is complete without visiting its world-famous landmarks. The Eiffel Tower is always in my mind a symbol of Paris and offers breathtaking views of the city from its top. Be sure to visit both during the day and at night to see it illuminated.

Next up I recommend heading over to the Louvre Museum, home to thousands of works of art, including the enigmatic Mona Lisa. But be warned it gets pretty crowded so be patient. With its vast collection, the Louvre is a treasure trove for art lovers.

Another must-see is the Notre-Dame Cathedral. Although the cathedral is still under restoration after the 2019 fire, you can admire its Gothic architecture and explore the surrounding Île de la Cité.

And of course don't forget to make time for a stroll down the Champs-Élysées and visit the Arc de Triomphe, which honors those who fought and died for France. Climb to the top for a panoramic view of the city.

2. Embrace the Art and Culture

Paris is a hub of art and culture, and you’ll find this at every corner. I'd recommend a visit the Musée d'Orsay, it has an extensive collection of Impressionist masterpieces by artists such as Monet, Degas, and Van Gogh and others I can't pronounce. The museum itself is a work of art sitting in a former Beaux-Arts railway station.

If you’re into modern art, the Centre Pompidou is the place to be. Its unique architecture and vibrant exhibitions make it a must-visit if you are a contemporary art enthusiast.

Don’t forget to explore the literary side of Paris. Wander through the historic Shakespeare and Company bookstore, where many famous writers have found inspiration.

3. Savor the Parisian Cuisine

A trip to Paris wouldn't be complete without indulging in its culinary delights. Start your day with a freshly baked croissant from a local boulangerie. For lunch, enjoy a classic croque-monsieur at a cozy café, or try the French onion soup.

Make sure to visit Le Marais district, where you’ll find a mix of traditional bistros and trendy eateries. If you’re a fan of pastries, don’t miss Pierre Hermé for macarons or Ladurée for their famous éclairs.

And, of course, an evening in Paris calls for dining at a Michelin-starred restaurant or enjoying a romantic meal by the Seine River.

4. Explore the Hidden Gems

While the iconic attractions are a must, Paris also offers many hidden gems that are waiting to be discovered. Personally I like to take a leisurely stroll in the Jardin des Plantes, it's a peaceful botanical garden that’s perfect for a relaxing afternoon. A bit of nature in a busy city.

Venture into the Canal Saint-Martin area, a trendy neighborhood known for its bohemian vibe, independent boutiques, and charming cafés. It’s a great place to go people watching and soak in the local atmosphere.

If you're in the mood for something out of the ordinary may I also recommend a visit the Père Lachaise Cemetery where famous figures like Oscar Wilde, Jim Morrison, and Edith Piaf are laid to rest. The cemetery’s serene pathways and ornate tombs make it an interesting stop and might even get your pulse racing.

5. Plan the Perfect Day Trip

If you have extra time, consider taking a day trip from Paris. The Palace of Versailles is, as you might have already expected, the place of opulence. The nice thing is it's just a short train ride away and offers a glimpse into the life of French royalty, if you're into that kind of thing.

And another great day trip option is the charming town of Giverny where you can visit Claude Monet’s home and gardens. The water lilies and Japanese bridge in his garden were the inspiration for many of his famous paintings, it's almost as if you're stepping into one of his famous works.

6. Travel Tips for Paris

  • Public Transport: Paris has an extensive public transport system, including the Metro, buses, and trams. Consider getting a Paris Visite Pass for unlimited travel.

  • Language: While many Parisians speak English, learning a few basic French phrases can go a long way in enhancing your experience.

  • Safety: Paris is generally safe, but like any big city, it’s important to stay aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded tourist areas.

  • Timing: To avoid long lines at popular attractions, try to visit early in the morning or late in the afternoon.

There you have it, my guide to the City of Lights, Paris. If it's been on your bucket list, like it was mine, you won't be disappointed. If you think it's overrated you'll be in for a pleasant surprise, Paris offers something for every traveler. So pack your bags, brush up on your French, and get ready to fall in love with the City of Lights. Bon voyage!
